Diabetes is a lifestyle disease and one has to smartly manage to overcome the complications caused by this disease. In Diabetes either insulin is not produced in sufficient quantity or what ever little insulin is produced, it is not utilised by the body of a person. One of the long term complications caused by Diabetes are changes in connective tissue which can occur due to high sugar levels in blood.
Adhesive capsulitis, often referred to as frozen shoulder, is one such complication which results due to excessive blood sugar levels. It refers to a pathological condition of the shoulder joint which causes a gradual loss of motion usually in just one shoulder.
The musculoskeletal system can be affected by diabetes in many ways. One of the conditions caused by this disease is frozen shoulder. A person suffering from frozen shoulder experiences pain and severe limited active and passive range of motion of the glenohumeral joint, particularly external rotation.
Exercises which help in healing the Frozen shoulder
(1) Pendulum Stretch
(2) Towel Stretch which involves holding one end of a towel behind one’s back and the other end with another hand
(3) Finger Walk (Face a wall three-quarters of an arm’s length away).
(4) Cross-body reach. Sit or Stand
(5) Armpit Stretch
(6) Outward rotation
(7) Inward rotation
Rheumatoid Arthiritis and Diabetes are very different type of diseases but there is a connection between the two. Research shows that Arthiritis may raise the risk for diabetes by about 50 per cent and Diabetes may increase the risk of getting Arthiritis, including Rheumatoid Arthiritis and related issues by about 20 per cent.
According to medical experts, Frozen shoulder is a self-limiting condition which means it will eventually go away on its own but people suffering from it may not regain their full range of motion.
Both exercises and medicines will help in treating frozen shoulder associated with Diabeties. In consultation with a doctor, one can take aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others), to help reduce pain and inflammation due to frozen shoulder. In some cases, doctors may prescribe stronger pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Many people with frozen shoulder improve can control pain and restore motion by adopting simple treatments.
Before commencing stretching exercises for frozen shoulder, please bear in mind to warm up shoulder before performing the exercises. The best way to do that is to take a warm shower or bath for 10 to 15 minutes.
